On a workstation, almost everything can be adjusted. The seat moves up and down, the seat pan slides forward, the keyboard moves. The desk, however, doesn't move, and neither does the display panel if its stand doesn't allow it.

This is why the stand determines the position of the monitor more surely than the furniture: it is the only part that can bridge the gap between the height of the desk and eye level. However, not all stands offer the same movements, and the technical specifications are often vague on this point.

Two pieces of information are enough to decide when looking at a product sheet: the list of movements actually offered, and the presence of VESA compatibility, which leaves open an alternative solution.

 

The four movements of a monitor stand

A monitor stand can offer up to four adjustments, rarely all present at the same time.

  • Height adjustment: the display panel slides vertically along the column. This is the most useful movement and often absent from entry-level models.
  • Tilt: the display panel tilts forward and backward by a few degrees. Present on almost all monitors, including the simplest ones.
  • Swivel: the display panel rotates left and right around its vertical axis, without moving the stand. Useful for showing the screen to someone.
  • Pivot: the display panel rotates 90 degrees to switch to vertical orientation. This requires the stand to allow the movement and the height to be sufficient so that the corner of the display panel does not touch the desk.

An entry-level monitor generally only offers tilt. An ergonomic monitor offers all four. Between the two, all combinations exist, and this is precisely what the technical specifications should allow you to verify.

 

Reading a technical specification without error

The formulations used on product sheets are short and you need to know what they cover.

"Adjustable tilt" refers only to the front-back tilt. This is the minimum, and this mention alone generally means that the height is not adjustable. An example from the catalog references: the product sheet for the 27-inch 4K UHD IPS Office Monitor indicates "adjustable tilt and VESA 100x100 mounting."

The useful reflex is to read this line before the resolution and diagonal: these last two can be remedied by changing models, the position of the display panel is endured every day.

 

The VESA standard, and why it appears on the product sheet

VESA here refers to a standardized mounting pattern, present on the back of most monitors. It consists of four screw holes arranged in a square, whose spacing is expressed in millimeters.

For desktop diagonals, the dominant format is 100 x 100 mm, i.e., four screws spaced 10 cm apart. Large formats go up to 200 x 200, 300 x 300 or 400 x 400 mm, the spacing increasing with the weight to be supported.

This is the information to note at the time of purchase, even if you don't plan to use it: it determines what will be possible later.

 

When the original stand is not enough

Three situations come up regularly, and none can be solved by changing screens.

The display panel remains too low even in the high position. This happens on tall desks and on models with short columns. Raising it with a support placed under the stand is the simplest solution, and it does not require any disassembly.

The desk lacks depth. A stand occupies a footprint on the desk that pushes the display panel forward, whereas setback is precisely what makes a large screen comfortable. Freeing up this footprint can gain several centimeters of distance.

The workspace must remain completely clear. This is the case for shared workstations and areas where the desk is used for other purposes outside of working hours.
